I'm really keen on the idea of co-housing for reasons aligned with that. The organisational (as in people who are good at organising, not the "bosses") and handy/craftspeople keep the environment ticking over and ask the other residents to chip in with x tasks. Everyone else does whatever work they do and kick in a bit more to the co-op kitty.
