If we're talking film qua film, yep, When Night is Falling really does blow Desert Hearts away. Pascale Bussières, ooh la la. Just my type (well, just one of my types). And I liked the whole religious tension, and the way they handled Martin's character. And the music. And the visuals. :-)
I think a lot of my fondness for Desert Hearts relates to when I first saw it (obviously) and my liking of the book. Objectivity, well, it's a nice word.
Re the smoking thing, damn, my deepest hidden desires are starting to creep into the light of day. I am starting to succumb to The Dark Side. It's all downhill from here, I know it. :-)
