My g/f has commissioned me to create a party mix for a New Year's party she's throwing tonight, probably because she thinks that someone with in excess of 200 CDs has tons of party music.
The brief, in its entirety, was "get a lot of music that everyone likes and we can dance to". Alas. 200 CDs isn't really that much (but I suppose it's more than the dozen or so they have), and a lot of it is electronica or downtempo. Ok, a lot of it is stuff I like dancing to, but hm. The guests are my g/f and her two blokes, whose latest music purchase was the soundtrack to A Knight's Tale (Queen, Tin Lizzy, Heart, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, ho fucking hum); two 40-something gayboys who live down the road (did I mention this is a small country town?); two 30-something women (not sure if they're a couple) who are into New Agey stuff. And me. There may be others.
Thank god I like classic disco (except the Bee Gees, urk). So I have Donna Summer. I have a compiliation of good soul music, so that takes care of LaBelle and Cheryl Lynn (Got To Be Real). I luuurve Grace Jones, so I've thrown in a ton there. Brian Ferry - funny how I love him now when I loathed him as a teenager. The Pretenders did a couple of dancy tunes and so did Blondie. As for the rest, they have to put up with a ton of Moorcheeba, Seal, Moby, Moloko, Madonna and Black Box - tunes that they should at least recognise. I threw in some Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Iggy Pop and Fur Patrol to keep the boys happy with a few guitars. I had high hopes of Fat Boy Slim (because I think of him as being fairly middle of the road), but actually, his stuff is a little bit "out there", and some of it is just a little too rude for the mixed company. I stuck in a lot of the jazzy Verve remixes, because I like listening to them, even if they're not dancy per se - although I'd be happy dancing to them myself.
I've now got over 6 hours of fairly listenable (something for everyone, even if I don't succeed in keeping everyone happy all the time) and somewhat danceable music, so maybe I'm just a little disco tart after all. Just wait for me to grab my white stilettos and my fringed handbag...
And. 38 degrees! (100F) WAHHHHHHHHHH! I like driving my car, even for an hour out in the country. But no air-con can be a big drag. All in a good cause, I suppose.
