OMG, I've just found a  genre called "dubstep", thanks to this album review in today's Observer. Ok, it's been around for a couple of years - in London - but obviously I'm not there, alas. They say it comes out of garage, which is a genre I can't stand 95% of, but it's completely different. It reminds me of the difference between jungle (most of it is ick, to me) and DnB (I loooove). So to me, it's dubby with the pared-back sounds, early hip-hoppy with the beats, and nicely DnB-y with the bass, but it's a deeper pared-back bass as well. Can't see the garage in it, frankly (except that garage also uses hip-hop beats, I suppose).

There's an interesting wee doco on YouTube which discusses it. I would like to have played it from the Beeb site, and listened to some music samples, but I can't. Bleah. The doco features typically-eloquent DJs (not!), but I totally agree with what a couple of them say about house, which still sounds the same after 10 years (actually, more like 20 - samesamesame boring), and how later DnB has also become formulaic. It was about time for some interesting new sounds.

I want to check out this DMZ (apologies for CrapSpace page) club if it's still going: "There's too many places that have plush interiors and crap sounds. It's backwards, really." If it's for going and soaking up sounds and dancing, I couldn't agree more.

Anyways, I can see lots of music-buying occurring on my wee jaunt to London-town. Eeeee!

PS. New alternate icon, even featuring a Hawaiian shirt! Not quite sure how to define where I'll use it, yet.
