Heh, it might seem cliched now, but in 1986, it really was ground-breaking. A lesbian movie! Where the women ended up together! However, the book really is a lot better than the movie. Ok, while it's a straight woman's coming-out story, it's handled really well, and in a non-schmaltzy way.
Still, I'm sure I'm biased, I got into both at an impressionable age. :-)
And, yes, I have an inherent bias towards the lesbian romance thing too, naturally enough. I actually prefer gay boys for visual hawt sex (if I'm in that mood), but if I really want a "happily ever after" kinda book, with romance, well, I seem to be hardwired. God, I'm turning into my mother (except for lust-object gender).
I'm glad I'm not alone when it comes to the elegant ladies and their cigarette holders. We're warped, really. ;-)
