Excuse my *SQUEE!*

Ok, I don't possess a TV - I have never owned one of my own - and I don't imagine myself getting one in a hurry. I just wish you could plug gaming consoles into an LCD screen (the kind attached to a computer).
So, as you may gather, there isn't much TV that I see. I've loved Torchwood, I am enjoying Heroes and I did watch all of the latest series of Doctor Who, despite the fact I wish David Tennant would disappear into a singularity. However, I have some guilty secrets: I watched all of the first series of Desperate Housewives (am I the only person in the world who thinks that Bree is a sex goddess?), although I don't have any desire to get the rest. And I am addicted to The L Word. I mean, cute girlie-girls getting it on with each other? Just call me Bubba.
So, I just watched the show that was broadcast on Monday in the US, which is the 3rd of this new series. Thank god, it was fab. As good as the best eps in the first series (if we don't count Marina). The pretentious arty Jenny moment was actually amusing, if you realised it was a homage to A Streetcar Named Desire, down to the saxophone music. Jenny was an amusing fruit loop. Max was almost endearing... despite his macking up to the boss's daughter and still somehow not divulging his status. The ensemble pieces were mainly great, except the "straights vs queers" cocktail party - stereotypes much? The showdown between Shane and Papi was fun. Cybill Shepherd is doing a decent job, and hopefully her botox will wear off a bit soon. Alice was cute, of course. I even managed to ignore Angstus and his sulking.
But. That good stuff pales into insignificance next to Bette. It's interesting, because Jennifer Beals strikes me as more than a little bit hippy-dippy in RL (not in a bad way), but she can play determined, proper, type-A, focussed, kick-arse chick in style. And those skirts. Dear bloody god. You can't call it walking, what she does in them. And there she is, struggling with her ethics for all of 5 seconds before she unleashes the Bette Beast. Rrrrrrowr. And while her perky blonde little offsider doesn't do it for me in the slightest, she at least does a good job of seeming caught up in the whirlwind. And what a fiiiine whirlwind it is too. Welcome back, to Bette and her moves.
I suppose it's too much to hope they sustain that quality throughout the rest of the series, but I certainly have higher hopes than I did a few weeks back.

Date: 2007-01-26 12:21 am (UTC)As for La Beals, I know. I had a massive crush on her when I was 16 and Flashdance came out. I saw it six times at the movie theatre - never done that again. But it was totally about adolescent hormones and the eye-candy. Seeing her play Bette, though, has turned into a bit of a revelation. The way she has all those emotional nuances flowing over her face is just fab.
While I know bugger-all about the acting craft, to me it's like music in that it comprises pitch and volume. The pitch is hitting the right emotional resonance at the right time; the volume needs to be appropriate for the moment, and the ebbs and flows are what gives the piece its "dynamic range", if you like. Ms Beals seems to be spot on with the pitch, and she most definitely has the range - whether she's shrieking at the top of her lungs (literally or not!) or just silently responding, it's never sustained for too long or too loud, while the quietest nuances aren't allowed to escape us. Just fab, and I think I'm becoming a definite fangirl.
Of course, the eye-candy still doesn't hurt. :-)

I'm not really a Bette fan though! Sure she's pretty but she doesn't do it for me. I like Shane, the reporter one and Jenny.

Date: 2007-01-26 11:00 am (UTC)I think Mia Kirshner, who plays Jenny, is a fab actress, but I find Jenny's character a bit annoying. Still, she's gotten a lot better as time has gone on. Heh, I'm fairly orientated towards girlie-girls, which is why Shane doesn't work for me at all, but Bette does. Alice, the reporter, is very cute, though. She's also great at the comedy moments. Of course, my absolute fave was Marina. Phew! And I like Helena too.
Also, I meant to get back to you about cell salts, ages ago! I don't think of "cell salts" as anything special in terms of homeopathy. I think a lot of people fall into the trap of trying to prescribe them like herbs - mag phos for "spasms", kali phos for "tiredness" and the like. That's not how you should prescribe - you look at the individual picture.
I think the thing about "cell salts" is that they are often a common remedy for certain symptom pictures, but it's kind of like taking odds. For example, with a screaming, yelling, angry baby with a red face that's teething, you've probably got a 80% chance of the remedy being Chamomilla. But you can't fall into the trap of thinking that Chamoilla is the remedy for teething babies. If you can't do a proper case, and you only have first aid remedies to hand, sure, you can give it a go, and hope that you're in the 80%, but that isn't proper prescribing.
So too with "cell salts". Like any other remedies, if they're the correct remedy for the symptom picture, they will work, and perhaps they might be more likely to work than some. So, if you had a picture of nervousness and restlessness, with perhaps headaches, maybe the Mag Phos would work. But if the person was WORSE from heat and pressure, and was a PASSIVE individual, you can just about guarantee that it won't work - if they're also pale and sweaty, they might need homeopathic Zinc.
So, there's my burble about cell salts. I just think of them as being normal homeopathics, and I often forget that they've been singled out in that way. They were mainly interesting to homeopaths initially because they're fairly "inert" substances by themselves, but potentisation showed their potential. Before that, the homeopaths had mainly studied strong and poisonous elements like Arsenicum, and known medicinal herbs, like Chamomilla. So the cell salts were important in getting people to study substances that didn't immediately seem to be therapeutic, but are important to the functioning of our bodies. :-)
