Paid off by my birthday!!!!

As some of you will be aware, I've been in horrible debt since before I went to the UK in 1998. My present job is paying me ridiculous shitloads of money (praise the universe), and I've been steadily whittling the debt down since I've been here in Oz.

I have $6700 to go for my UK debt. I sent off 3 grand today (not counting that yet), and I hope to maintain the usual $2500 a month I send off over there for the next couple of months (since the two months over Xmas weren't exactly optimal for my income). I also have about half of the loan for my knee surgery to pay off, and I have a small payment each fortnight gradually eroding it. I hope to be able to get rid of the rest of it in a lump in June.

Therefore, by the time I'm 39, I'll be debt-free! *happy dance*

(Don't mind me, just some anticipatory excitement. I can't believe I'm finally going to get rid of this weight off my back.)

I have a mortgage so I understand *exactly* how you feel, except (all things going to plan and no major disasters financially) I will be approx 61 before Im looking at being debt free :(

And Im so broke now its not funny, I started the year with approx $2K owing on my CC and $91 in my savings acct.

Heh, once I get this lot paid off, get my car resprayed ($5000), have a wee trip to the UK, and buckle down and save for a year, my intention is to be looking at buying some property by the end of next year. So, it'll be back on the treadmill again, but at least I'll have an asset. So you've definitely got a leg-up on me, restricted cash flow and all. :-)

That is definitely worthy of a happy dance. Plus once you're not working on paying that off, that's a lot of money that can be squirrelled away for your projects of one sort or another. Yay you!

Heh, up until the age of 28, the most debt I ever had was a couple of grand, when I bought a computer on hire purchase (and paid half in cash). Imagine my horror on having over 10 times that amount of debt 6 or so years later... O_o

But yeah, it's getting to be a serious relief.

Hurrah for being debt free! It's amazing what a difference it makes. I have a mortgage, which sort of precludes that option for awhile, but it also means I have some sense of security.

Yes, one day I will have assets. It's kind of embarrassing not to at present, but one thing at a time, I suppose. :-D

If you can put aside a similar amount after you pay off your debts, then you will probably have assets in no time. (But you should have at least one good splurge first.)

I'm looking forward to being in the debt-free situation (not counting mortgage). We're whittling away at it and probably in a year or two we'll be there. I know that I'll be doing a happy dance then too. :)

Debt-free is good! And it sounds like the effort to get there will be useful, in terms of being in the habit of setting money aside for when you want to get into real estate.
