Didja ever come across the Status Quo spoof song by the HeeBeeGeeBees? Imagine a typical Status Quo DUM da Dum da Dum da Dum riff played in a bog standard 4-chord song structure, with lyrics something like this:

Boooor-ing song,
Boooor-ing song,
We have to sing the same refrain,
And the same refrain again,
Boring song,
A boring song.

That is fucking perfect - it really does sound like every one of Status Quo's boring songs. And I loooove Angus Deaton. He's on my list of 5 guys I'd totally do. :-)

But... that's the case for every single pop band which makes it. People like songs which they can learn the lyrics of in total after about two listens. If - like the famous melodramatic electroclash act Vostok Lake - you write lyrics with narrative development, wordplay, variation, etc, people just look at you funny and don't dance.

I'd rather listen to Minuit's four repetitive lines per song which are generally excellent than three different verses of dull nonsense, which is the standard for pop bands.

I should also add that I think this is an absolutely brilliant number, so perhaps my opinion should be discounted.

I love it. Also, call me perverted, but the video is hot too (I can't help it, I came out in my last year of school, at AGGS).

And I can't talk either, I loved Da Da Da for at least a few weeks after it hit the charts. :-)

Well, the nice thing about melodramatic electroclash is that the rhyming scheme and meter also changes between most songs. :-)

Totally agreed about catchy pop music, but the vast majority of Minuit's oeuvre seems to have the same meter throughout - I love their music (I have all of the CDs), but I wish the lyrics had a bit more variety between tracks!

If I was the kind of person who liked staying up till ungodly hours, this would be perfect - once I'm sufficiently sleep-deprived, this would be about the right level of lyrical complexity, and the music doesn't expect vigorous dancing.

Oh, no, I don't require lots of lyrics within a song - heh, I love electronica, after all - it's more the fact that most of their songs have pretty much just that rhyme scheme/meter.
