Elections in NZ are over, and the results are in. I'm glad I won't have to stay away from home for the next 3 years. (did I mention? I'm seriously considering going back to England next year; this place/government is starting to wear on me. I can earn lots of $$$ - or £££ - there at the mo).

Bic Runga has some good words right now:

Come around for tea
Dance me round and round the kitchen
By the light of my T.V
On the night of the election
Ancient stars will fall into the sea
And the ocean floor sings her sympathy

Drive me miles away
Escape the sky that we lay under
Of all the dreams we cannot shake
We're always shaking in our slumber
In the car don't let me fall asleep
I might leave my heart here on your vinyl seat

Well the sound of the city's now long gone
And in the silence of the park and every darkened cinema
Feel the little changes coming on
So come to me where you belong

Of all the bright machinery
Love's the strangest of inventions
How could this all just turn on me?
When all I wanted was perfection
And you are
That's what you are to me
You're the brightest star when all the world's asleep

Well the sound of the city's now long gone
And in the silence of the park and every darkened cinema
Feel the little changes coming on
So come to me where you belong
Come to me where you belong

Nice song!

Hey, this sounds like the beginnings of an excellent plan. You go to the UK, get lots of cash, & then come over to the USA & have lots of fun with lots of listies [definitely including Atlanta]. How's that by you?

Cool! well, I've been to the northern US (Michigan), western (California) and eastern parts (New York). I haven't visited any southern states and I probably should. Also, it'd be nice to hear people in the flesh who actually talk the way y'all do. :-)

What I'd really like to do is attend one of the big cons that everyone seems to go to - I've only been to one small con in NZ (and a gaming con in London, since I was dragged along by a friend). It'd be groovy do see how the big ones operate!

Speaking of cash, though, I've gone mad and am attempting to buy a house. Who knows if I'll get the dosh to actually GO to England if that comes off? (Actually, I should, it's only a grand or so one-way).

Be sure to check into all the tax things. Around here that involves filing a homestead exemption. Then there's Private Mortgage Insurance [pays off the bank if there's a default]; it's required in some transactions. You'll doubtless have some local version that's an equal pain in the @ss.

Yeah, tax things. The Aussie tax system is quite complicated. NZ is better because you don't get exemptions for bugger-all.

I will be having to pay mortgage insurance since I'll have to take a 100% loan. I'm hopeless at saving, but I am v. good at paying my bills. Let's hope I can convince a bank of the same thing. It's harder since I've only been here 9 months as well.

Part of the reason I'm doing it here (in Australia) though is that you get a $7000 grant for a first homeowner's allowance, and you're also exempt from stamp duty (I believe).

There're some tax thingies for first-time homebuyers here too.
